On Tuesday, a fortnight after crossing the one lakh cases mark, India became the world’s 7th country to register above two lakh COVID-19 cases, with above 8,000 new infections and 219 deaths from the coronavirus reported in a single day.
According to the data collated from state governments, India’s total count of cases had reached 2,00,745 late on Tuesday. The USA, Brazil, Spain, Russia, the UK and Italy have recorded more cases till now.
Maharashtra again reported its highest number of cases at 2,287, but had dropped for the 3rd day in a row. The state’s contribution in the national total count of new cases stood at 28% on Tuesday, which is the lowest since 3rd May.
Although Maharashtra’s coronavirus cases are falling, Delhi (1,298 new cases), Bengal (396 new cases), Karnataka (388 new cases), Haryana (296 new cases), Odisha (141 new cases), Kerala (86 new cases), Tripura (130 new cases) and Mizoram (12 new cases) reported their highest single-day surge in infections. The pandemic also continued to increase in Tamil Nadu (1,091 new cases), Gujarat (415 new cases), Uttar Pradesh (369 new cases) and Rajasthan (273 new cases).
Maharashtra reported 103 fatalities, second highest in a single day after 29th May (116), taking the total death toll to 2,465. Delhi reported 33 fatalities during the day, Gujarat (29 deaths), Tamil Nadu (13 deaths), Bengal (10 deaths) and Uttar Pradesh (7 deaths) were few other states with high death count. On Tuesday, Mumbai saw a marginal drop with 1,117 new cases, the lowest in the past six days.
Haryana recorded its highest rise in COVID-19 cases in a single day as 296 people tested positive, taking the state’s total count to 2,652. The state’s worst-hit district, Gurgaon, reported 160 fresh cases and its total count is 1,063 — accounting for almost 40% of the cases in the state. The state’s fatalities count reached 23 with 2 more fatalities.
Tamil Nadu’s public health authorities have started to contact people with comorbidities as part of the fight against coronavirus as new cases reached 1,091 on Tuesday, taking the state total to 24,586. The death toll reached to 197 with 13 more deaths reported.
Bengal reported the highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases, with 396 people tested positive in the last 24 hours. Kerala also reported its highest single-day count of 86 coronavirus cases on Tuesday.
