Doctors in India ask for support as 196 physicians die due to COVID-19

In an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian Medical Association had requested sufficient care and safety for physicians and their families, as 196 doctors who were fighting against COVID-19 had died.

On Sunday, the Health Ministry reported approximately 64,000 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours as the total number of patients has reached 2,153,010. Almost 628,747 patients are still undertaking treatment. India has also reported 861 fatalities taking the death count to 43,379.

Around 50,000 new cases per day have been reported by India since mid-June. After the United States and Brazil, India has the third-highest caseload in the world. It has the fifth rank of the most deaths however its fatality rate is about 2%, which is lower than the other top two worst affected countries.

The coronavirus disease has been spreading extensively throughout the country even though India has maintained moderately low mortality rates.
