If something goes wrong when one is undergoing medical treatment, it is called a ‘medical accident’ or ‘adverse event’. If the treatment has not worked or there have been complications, this does not always mean that there has been a mistake, or that someone is to be blamed. In some cases, one has to accept errors or complications as unavoidable risks of the treatment and, the doctor or other healthcare professional should not be blamed. For example, when one has undergone a major surgery, he or she can expect some risks because of the surgery. Complications can occur with minor procedures too.
