Urea is a beneficial ingredient in topical skin applications due to its hydrating and keratolytic properties. It has been used to treat various skin conditions such as hand eczema/dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasiform scalp dermatoses.

A recent article presented the results of two observational studies assessing urea-containing products efficacy and safety for these dermatological conditions.

In the first study, a 30% urea cream was applied to treat hand eczema. The results showed a significant decrease in transepidermal water loss, improved hydration and reduced skin redness. The second study examined a foaming product containing 10% urea for seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and scalp psoriasiform dermatoses.

It demonstrated significant improvements in desquamation measures and dryness. Participants in both studies reported good efficacy and ease of application, with no adverse reactions.

Urea – a constituent of the skins natural moisturizing factor (NMF) - is crucial in maintaining skin integrity and hydration. It also expresses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Depending on its concentration, urea is used in various formulations such as creams, foams, gels and shampoos. Urea-containing products are generally well-tolerated; mild skin irritation is its rare and temporary side effect.

Hand eczema is a common inflammatory skin condition caused by various factors, including atopic dermatitis (AD) and occupational exposure. Urea-containing creams can help alleviate AD symptoms and maintain the skin barrier function in these patients. Additional treatments like corticosteroids and immunomodulators may be necessary in more severe cases.

SD and psoriasiform scalp dermatoses are characterized by inflammation and epidermal changes. Urea-containing formulations have shown promising results in improving symptoms and reducing erythema, scaling and pruritus in SD patients. SD can be treated with various topical agents, including antifungals, corticosteroids, keratolytics and immunomodulators. Oral medications may be prescribed in severe or chronic cases.

Evidence suggests that urea-containing formulations effectively treat hand eczema, SD and scalp psoriasiform dermatoses. Ureas hydrating and keratolytic properties contribute to its therapeutic benefits in dermatological applications.
