A Swedish study links vascular health to brain aging, finding that conditions like diabetes and stroke accelerate brain aging while healthy lifestyles slow it. Researchers emphasize maintaining vascular health to protect against cognitive decline and dementia.
A study by Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, highlighted the connection between vascular health and brain aging, emphasizing the role of lifestyle in cognitive resilience. Published in Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association, the research used AI to estimate brain age from 739 MRI scans of cognitively healthy individuals.
The findings revealed that diabetes, stroke, and inflammation were associated with older-looking brains, while regular exercise and healthy habits were linked to younger brain appearances. Lead author Anna Marseglia stressed the importance of maintaining vascular health, such as stable blood glucose levels, to protect the brain.
As dementia cases rise globally, the study underscored how managing vascular risk factors may complement emerging Alzheimer’s treatments in mitigating cognitive decline.
