Slushy Ice Drinks Pose Health Risks for Young Children, Warn Experts

Experts warn that slushy ice drinks containing glycerol can cause serious health issues in children under eight, including unconsciousness and seizures. They recommend raising the age limit and urging public awareness to prevent glycerol intoxication.

 

Researchers are warning that children under eight should avoid slushy ice drinks containing glycerol following a rise in hospitalizations in the UK and Ireland. Glycerol, commonly used as a sweetener and anti-freezing agent in brightly colored slushies, can cause serious health issues like shock, low blood sugar, and loss of consciousness when consumed in high amounts.


A study published in Archives of Disease in Childhood reviewed cases of 21 children aged two to seven who needed emergency care after drinking slushies. The majority of these incidents occurred between 2018 and 2024, with children displaying symptoms such as loss of consciousness and low blood sugar. While all recovered quickly, researchers urge that the recommended age limit for slushies containing glycerol should be raised to at least eight.


Food safety agencies in the UK and Ireland already advise against slushies for children under four, but experts now advocate stronger caution. Parents are encouraged to be vigilant and avoid such drinks for younger children.
